The North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and
Technology (NERIST) has been set up, to provide a system of education
and to create technical manpower at various levels for the development
of the North Eastern Region of the country.
Academic Structure: The
academic programmes in Engineering and Technology at NERIST consist
of three independent modules (Certificate, Diploma and Degree) each
of two years' duration. Each module admits students through an entrance
examination conducted by NERIST. Each module also provides terminology
corresponding to an occupational level, and at the same time allows
entry to the next higher module, leading finally to a degree in
engineering/technology in six years' time after class X. In the
Applied Science stream, a two-year Base module and four-years Degree
module are offered. The system also allows lateral entry from outside
with necessary pre-requisites, at the base of each module. From
the session 1996-97, two M Tech programmes in Environmental Science
& Engineering and Information Technology have also been added
to the academic programme of NERIST and three more courses are likely
to be added.
Reservation of Seats: Of the total
number of seats in the Base Modules, 70% of seats are reserved for
the candidates of 7 States of North East ( Assam, Arunachal Pradesh,
Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) as States quota
(10% to each NE State) and the remaining 30% of seats are filled
up on the basis of merit through an open competition for whole of
India including students from the North East.
Certificate:
The certificate courses consist of 4 semesters spread over 2 years.
The disciplines offered are Construction Technology, Maintenance
Engineering (Production, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning),Agricultural
Engineering (Farm Equipment Trade & Food Processing Trade) and
Forestry. Candidates who have passed the 10th standard are eligible
to apply for these courses.
Diploma: The diploma courses are of 2 years
duration. The Disciplines offered are Agricultural Engineering,
Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics & Electrical
Communication, Electrical and Mechanical. Candidate must be
a NERIST certificate holder or have passed 10+2 exam with Physics,
Chemistry, Maths or vocational subjects.
Degree: There is a 2 year degree course
available to students who are NERIST Diploma holders or 3 year Diploma
holders from a polytechnic with 60% marks. The B Tech course of
4 years duration is open to any student who is a NERIST Certificate
holder or has passed 10+2 exam with Physics, Chemistry, Maths or
vocational subjects. The disciplines offered are Agricultural, Civil,
Computer Science Engineering, Electronics & Communication, Electrical
and Mechanical.
Admission Procedure: The selection of students
is based on merit in the NERIST entrance examination. Those who
have completed class X are eligible for NEE-I, which is held in
the first week of June for admission to the Base (Certificate) Module.
NEE-II is open to those who have completed 10+2 and is also held
in June for lateral entry to the Diploma Module of Engineering and
Degree programme in Applied Science. NEE-III is held in November
for the lateral entry to the Degree Module of Engineering.
Fee Structure: The fee for the first semester
is Rs. 2,145 and Rs. 485-635 for subsequent semesters.
