The Engineering and Medical Colleges have been segregated on a state-wise basis and details on the colleges can be obtained by clicking on the relevant state link. Engineering colleges have been further segregated into IITs, other engineering colleges and RECs. The IITs are autonomous institutes and admission to them is through a joint entrance examination called the JEE. The students are given admission based on their ranking at an all India level. In case of RECs, candidates can apply to the RECs which have jurisdiction over the area from where the candidates have passed the qualifying exam.

The seven IITs are India's Premier Engineering Institutes. The prestigious University of Roorkee has recently been declared as one of the Indian Institutes of Technologies (IIT)s by the government of India. The admissions to all these institutes is common to all seven institutes and will be conducted by means of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
