The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)
is conducted for admission to the 4-year M.Tech./ B.Pharm./ B.Design.
programmes and 5-year B.Arch./ Integrated M.Sc. (including Dual
Degree) and M.Tech. programmes at seven Indian Institutes of Technology,
Institute of Technology - Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU), Varanasi
and Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad.
Candidates who are eligible for admission
under the 'Direct Admission of Students Abroad' (DASA) quota need
not write the JEE. Admission is open to all Indian nationals residing
in India and abroad.
About IIT Kharagpur: IIT Kharagpur
was established in 1950. On Sept. 15, 1956, the Parliament of India
passed an act known as the Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur)
Act declaring this Institute as an Institute of national importance.
The Institute was also given the status of an autonomous University
the in same year.
Reservations: 15% of seats are
reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) and 7.5% seats for Scheduled Tribe
(ST) candidates, with relaxed qualifying norms for admission. SC/ST
candidates failing to qualify but satisfying certain minimum requirements
may be offered admission to a preparatory course of a duration of
one year.
Preferential Allotment: There
is preferential allotment of Institutes and Courses to certain category
of students. Two seats in each Institute are available for children
of defence or paramilitary personnel killed or permanently disabled
(DS) in action. One seat in each Institute is available for physically
handicapped candidates (PH) who are otherwise fit to pursue the
course. This allotment is available to only those candidates of
the above categories whose names appear in the merit list of General
Category.
Candidates must not exceed 23 years
of age and 28 years in case of SC/ ST candidates. Candidates should
have passed intermediate exam (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry and
Mathematics as optional subjects. Candidates seeking admission to
5½ years M.Tech. or the dual degree course in Biotechnology
and Biochemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur should have passed
in Biology also at 12th Std. 3-year diploma holders of the Board
of Technical Education of any State or Union Territories are also
eligible. Candidates appearing in the qualifying exam and expecting
it to pass it before 30th September may take the JEE on provisional
basis. Candidates should be physically fit as per the prescribed
medical standard.
Application Procedure: Application
form and Information Bulletin can be obtained on payment of Rs 500
(Rs 250 for SC/ST candidates) from the notified branches of Canara
Bank or Union Bank of India.
Admit Cards: Admit cards are
issued to all eligible candidates. In case the candidate does not
receive the admit card by the prescribed date, he/she may contact
the Institute.
Test Procedure: The test consists
of 3 papers, each of 3 hours duration of 100 marks each in Physics,
Chemistry and Maths. Sample questions are given in the Information
Bulletin. The question papers are in English and Hindi. The candidates
are permitted to write answers in English or in any one of the following
Indian Languages : Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Tamil or
Telugu.
The IITs have a two-stage process of
selection. The first stage comprising of a screening paper of 3
hours duration is held on the first Sunday of January every year
and the second stage is held on the second Sunday of May every year.
The second exam comprises three papers of Physics, Chemistry and
Maths, each of two hours duration.
Selection: A merit list is prepared
after the first exam. About 15,000 candidates are shortlisted who
will be able to take the second exam. After the main exam, the list
of qualified candidates is displayed at IITs and published in leading
newspapers. Candidates whose names are included in the merit list
are called for counselling and medical examination. Candidates called
for counselling and desirous of joining B.Arch. or B.Design courses
are required to qualify in a two-hour aptitude test to be conducted
at each counselling Institute in June.
DASA: Students seeking admission
through Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) should have studied
abroad for at least 5 yrs inclusive of 10+2 in a foreign country
during the last 8 years. Candidates should have secured 80% aggregate
marks (or equivalent grades) in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
in 10+2 and 70% marks in each paper. Candidates should have an aggregate
score of 1900 in SAT-II in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics IIC.
Merit lists in April and June are prepared based on SAT-II scores.
Candidates desirous to be considered for Direct Admission under
DASA category are required to obtain Information Brochure and Application
Form for DASA by sending a bank draft for US $100 drawn in favour
of JEE at any one of the IITs on or before 30th April.
Fees: The tuition fee is Rs 15,000/-
per semester. Rs 21,000/- is payable at the time of admission.
Scholarships:
Merit-cum-means scholarships of Rs 300/- per month, exemption from
tuition fee to 25% of the students on roll and freeships to 10%
of students, 21 merit scholarships of Rs 50/- to Rs 300/- pm are
available.
Hostels: The Institute is residential. There
are 10 halls of residence for men students and one for women students
with 2,700 seats.

M.Tech. of 3 semester duration in Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural

The Institute also offers Master of City Planning (3 semesters),
Integrated M.Sc. of 5 years duration in Chemistry, Maths, Physics,
Applied Geology, Exploration Geophysics and Integrated M.Tech in
Biotechnology after 10+2 with PCMB.
Research Studies: Facilities
for PhD exist. The Cryogenic Engineering Centre of the Institute
provides technical assistance, equipment, expertise and training
to other IITs and Delhi University.
Non-Degree Programmes: The Institute provides
non-degree programmes such as modular courses, short-term courses,
non-degree/certificate courses, sponsored courses for Industry,
Government Agencies and Quality Improvement Programme for teachers
of engineering colleges.
